The Horizontes Foundation was established in 2009 by Horizontes Nature Tours, a pioneer company of ecotourism and nature trips in Costa Rica, recognized for our nature, biodiversity and, above all, for our people.
We are currently working with small family businesses to help them rebuild their main source of income… tourism.
We need to help rural families rebuild their small businesses with new communication tools and strategies, business and leadership capabilities, and key basic infrastructure to restart operations in challenging conditions like COVID-19. We have analyzed your most urgent needs and we need your input to provide the resources so that each family can restart their work.
The first project we are supporting is located on the Osa Peninsula, on the South Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, which contains 2,5% of the world's biodiversity. Caminos de Osa, is a local organization of families who have learned to prosper through sustainable tourism. They promote environmental conservation and the development of rural communities through a tourism model that improves the quality of life, without compromising the integrity of the ecosystems.
For the past five years, this group of families has taken travelers through an exciting, authentic and transformative experience, immersed in the incredible rainforest. Hiking or kayaking, sharing with the locals and staying at their homes, are some of the highlights of the trip. Now, they are specialists in rural community tourism, but unfortunately, visitors are not arriving and they need support.
The other project we support is located in the Northern Corridor of Costa Rica, an extraordinary collection of landscapes that includes active volcanoes, waterfalls, navigable rivers between virgin forests and wonderful tropical beaches. Local community Chambers of Tourism are working to reestablish these small-scale, nature-based and community-driven destinations.
Within the tourist route, 2000 jobs and 270 small family businesses depend on tourism, taking adventurous travelers from the northern lowlands to the beaches of the North Pacific. In addition to the breathtaking landscapes, visitors treasure the stories the locals share with them, filled with pride, dedication, positivity and hope for a better tomorrow.
The COVID emergency has been difficult for our rural communities, we need your contributions to help them develop new capacities and find ways to make business prosper and tourism strengthen as soon as possible. At Fundación Horizontes we are committed to sustainable tourism as a way to improve livelihoods, which is why our commitment and our efforts are aimed at small family businesses and rural communities, which are key to local prosperity.
